Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD)
Date: Thursday, May 21, 2026
Introduction
Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) is an annual event focused on promoting digital accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities. It encourages awareness, education, and action related to accessible technology and design.
What Is GAAD?
GAAD is observed on the third Thursday of May each year. The day highlights the importance of ensuring that websites, apps, software, and digital content are accessible to everyone, including individuals with visual, hearing, motor, cognitive, and neurological disabilities.
History of GAAD
GAAD began after web developer Joe Devon wrote a blog post in 2011 encouraging developers and designers to better understand accessibility challenges. Together with accessibility advocate Jennison Asuncion, the first official Global Accessibility Awareness Day was launched in 2012. Since then, the event has grown into a worldwide movement involving schools, businesses, nonprofits, governments, and technology companies.
